TOURIST ATTRACTIONS IN CALABAR
Calabar is the capital city of Cross River State in Nigeria, and like every other state in the country it has a lot to offer nature-wise. It is about 1-1/2 hours from Lagos by plane and it takes about 25 minutes to reach it from Port Hartcourt. It has an international airport , the Margret Ekpo International Airport. It can also be reached from Lagos by flight which takes about an hour. The people of Calabar are quite hospitable and friendly.
One of the major Tourist Attractions in Calabar is its colonial architecture which can be found in the older parts of the city. The main areas where this type of architecture can be seen are Henshaw Town, Duke Town and the waterfront areas. The church in Duke town is one of the oldest in Nigeria established by the Presbyterian missionaries.
The tourists should also visit the cemetery near the Eyamba street which provides a stunning view over the town and the river.The cemetery houses the tomb of Mary Slessor, who was a missionary from Dundee in Scotland,UK. Another important Calabar Tourist Attraction is the Calabar museum which is located near the waterfront houses.The museum is housed inside the old government house which was the residence of the colonial governer.The building was made of Glasgow and was later on shipped to pieces.The museum contains works which reflects on the history of Calabar.
A lot of artifacts can be found inside the museum which highlights on the making of Palm Oil. Tourist Attractions in Calabar can never be complete without visiting the Drill Monkey Rehab Center. It is located on Ndidem Nsang Iso Road and hidden behind the Jahas Guest House. The center was developed by a couple who were biologists from USA.They were persuaded by the Nigerian government to stay back and look after the endangered Drill Monkeys which were hunted and eaten in the Afi Mountain range.
A review on the tourist attractions in Calabar can never be complete without mentioning the Drill Monkey Rehab Center. It is located on Ndidem Nsang Iso Road and hidden behind the Jahas Guest House.The center was developed by a couple who were biologists from USA - The founders of the Pandrillus foundation Liza Gadsby & Peter Jenkins. Drills are among Africa’s most endangered mammals, and are listed by the IUCN as the highest conservation priority of all African primates. They are semi-terrestrial monkeys, exhibiting extreme sexual dimorphism with males weighing up to 40 kg - three times the size of females.
They are semi- nomadic seasonally and little is known of their behavior or ecology in the wild. Their closest relative is the mandrill Mandri/lus sphinx. Drills are found only in Cross River State, Nigeria; southwestern Cameroon, and on Bioko Island, Equatorial Guinea. Their entire world range is less than 40,000 km2, smaller than Switzerland.
Drill numbers have been declining in all known habitat areas for decades as a result of illegal commercial hunting, habitat destruction, and human development: as few as 3,000 drills may remain in the wild, and fewer than 500 on Bioko as the most endangered form. Drills have also been declining in zoos internationally.
The founders of the Pandrillus foundation Liza Gadsby & Peter Jenkins have worked in Nigeria & Cameroon since 1988 to save the highly endangered drill monkey Mandrillus /eucophaeus from extinction. Projects collaborate with state and national governments, communities, traditional rulers, other international and local NGOs, zoos, advisory groups, and the private sector to achieve these goals.
Pandrillus works in both Nigeria and Cameroon in its capacity as a Nigerian-registered non-profit company. Pandrillus Foundation is registered in the USA as a 501 c 3 non-profit organization. Drills are fully protected by law in Nigeria and Cameroon and portions of their habitat are technically safeguarded, however little real protection exists for drills or other endangered species that share their habitat.
Drills will only survive the present and into the long term by the grace of their human neighbors, and the will and commitment of their host governments to enforce existing laws. As habitats shrink and become increasingly fragmented, the interactive management of wild and captive populations may play a crucial role.
